Newly turned tailback Tre Madden will miss the 2012 season after tearing a ligament in his left knee Thursday, the university confirmed.

About halfway through practice, Madden made a cut toward the endzone and fell. Nobody was around him and the injury immediately looked serious as trainers helped him limp off the field.

Madden was playing well in his short time at the position, even lining up under center as a wildcat quarterback and expanding upon his assignments the more comfortable he became

The Trojans will immediately feel the blow of Madden's injury as USC gets even thinner at running back. While freshman Javorious Buck Allen has missed much of spring with a pulled hamstring, the team has been relying on two seasoned tailbacks in Curtis McNeal and D.J. Morgan to carry most of the load.

While Madden still has a redshirt to burn after playing at linebacker in 2011 and even recording a start, USC will likely convert another player to running back or look to their walk-ons to learn quickly and at a high level.

After practice Thursday, Madden said he was upset and in pain. On Friday, he didn't comment much when asked about the injury. He did say, however, that he's spent a lot of the past 24 hours "thinking."
