"I grew up a mile and a half from USC," said Su'a's mother after he gave his verbal commitment to the Trojans. "My family memories are as Trojans, that is my school and I am so happy and so excited because I love watching my son play."
It came as little surprise Cravens announced for the Trojans when Scout discovered the date he chose to commit coincided with his mother's birthday. Cravens spoke throughout the recruiting process that his mother grew up a fan of USC.
Though USC was his mother's favorite, the Cravens' parents vowed to support their son no matter where his final decision would lead him.
"He could do whatever he wanted, that was his choice," said Crystal.
Growing up the third of five children, the Cravens' have worked to instill family values and a strong work ethic in their family.
It's exemplified in the family garage turned family gym where Su'a made his verbal announcement. The walls of the space are decorated by notes, letters, and posters he received from different universities throughout his recruitment.
The letters were hung to serve as a reminder that hard work can open doors of opportunity. The letters also remind Su'a, that education is one of his family's core values.
"In this home, there is no NFL pipe dream for Su'a," explained Kevin. "Sports can end in one play. He truly wants to pursue his business degree and think about life after sports. That was another big reason for his decision. Even if you go pro, your career is over probably before you're 30."
I'm proud of all my children and how they work," Kevin said. "You don't think they listen to your life lessons and things you say because you know you talk so much to them that you think it goes in one ear and out the other but they do listen to you. Su'a's a great kid and he's been easy and he's learned from his older brother and sister."
It took Crystal all she had to hold back tears when describing the traits she's most proud of in her son.
"He's a good kid. I'm teaching him to be humble, we don't brag," she said. "Su'a is a very sweet guy and once you get to know him, you fall in love with him."
There's no doubt, Trojan fans already have.
The only concerning question that remains regarding Cravens is how the high school senior will ever top this birthday present to his mom.
