Down 14-0 three minutes into the game on the road at Utah last Thursday was less than ideal for the then-No.13 ranked Trojans. But Coach Lane Kiffin says since his team came out on the winning side, he couldn’t have asked for a better scenario.
“You don’t ever want that to happen,” he told reporters after practice Tuesday, “unless you know you’re going to win.”
He continued to say that it was a good experience for the Trojans who discussed how to handle adversity following their loss to Stanford in September.
“It was good to see those guys in that environment and see them respond,” he said. “To see our guys do that this time around was really good.”
For the second week in a row the Trojans are preparing to play in a hostile environment. Thursday night at Utah could prove to have been just a warm-up compared to what they’ll get Saturday at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, home of the 12th man of the Seahawks.
Kiffin says the environment is one of his biggest concerns playing Washington. “) I think playing them at home,” he explained, “You go up there, the crowd and the stadium’s extremely loud that they’re in. And they play better at home. They’ve done that.”
The Huskies are 3-2 overall, all three wins coming at home. “They’re like two different teams,” Kiffin said of the Huskies play at home compared to on the road. “The concern for us on offense is handling the crowd, playing with good composure.”
On the Road Again
Speaking of playing the second straight week in a loud environment, this is also the Trojans road game in the last five weeks.
“We’ve got to make it through this thing, come out with a win, and come back home for five of the next six in L.A.,” Kiffin said.
He also says he actually doesn’t mind going on the road anymore, since his team has adapted and is improving with each trip they make. “This team’s used to going in, going through some adversity and not playing well, which is going to always happen at some points in games,” he said. “They make plays too. I know that we’ll be really composed if that happens again.”
