The Scout.com five-star from Plano (Texas) Prestonwood Christian is up for a top honor...

Mike Mitchell, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound middle linebacker from Prestonwood Christian Academy in Plano, Texas was named as one of 16 finalists for The U.S. Army Player of the Year.

Mitchell is the only Texan to make the final 16. He is currently ranked as the No. 34 recruit in the nation, a five-star prospect, by Scout.com.

"It is a big honor to be in the running against the best players not just in the state, but the nation. I have worked really hard this year, and I am thankful to have such good teammates to play with who make me a better player," says Mike Mitchell upon learning he was a finalist.

The recipient will be announced on January 4, 2013, at a formal dinner, which takes place on the eve of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Also known as the Hall Trophy, this award has been given annually since 2000 to the most outstanding high school football player in the United States. It is comparable to the Heisman Trophy given at the collegiate level.

Head Football Coach Chris Cunningham says, "I am extremely proud that Mike is one of only 16 players across the nation considered for this honor. To be the only player named from the best high school football state in the country is an honor itself.

What I am most proud of is that Mike has lived up to this honor and has had a tremendous year."

Mitchell, who has yet to make his college commitment is is considering offers from programs like Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas A&M.

The Lions are now headed into the play-offs. Mitchell led Prestonwood to a regular season record of 7-3 in TAPPS Division I.

Scout Eval: Mitchell is a special player at linebacker. He has elite level speed at the position and makes plays sideline-to-sideline. He is a terror coming downhill against the run. He fills holes quickly and uses his hands well to get off of blocks. His quickness allows him to come free and make plays before blockers get their hands on him. He has the ability to make the spectacular hit. His athleticism shines through om special teams. He has blocked punts, returned kicks and made devastating blocks. He is a factor when he steps on to the field. He has freaky numbers off the field as well, posting a sub 4.4 40-yard dash and securing the Sparq National Championship in the off-season.
