NO. 10 ST. AUGUSTINE (9-3) AT NO. 2 EDNA KARR (11-0) -- St. Augustine has been up and down during head coach Cyril Crutchfield's first-year at the helm in Gentilly. When the Purple Knights are on, they're as good as anybody. 2014 RB Leonard Fournette was on fire in his team's resounding 40-14 win at St. Thomas More. The 6-2, 230-pounder took over the game in the second half.
Karr trumped the Northwood Falcons last week in Shreveport, 35-14. Four-star Devante Noil, Karr's starting quarterback, crossed the goal-line on three keepers. A junior, Noil is projected as a WR. The Cougars' defense is headlined by five-star junior defensive end Gerald Willis and four-star senior CB Noel Ellis, a Texas A&M pledge.
NO. 2 EVANGEL CHRISTIAN (10-2) AT NO. 23 CARVER (8-3) -- Don't be misled by Carver's low seed. The (2A) Rams are very good with Alabama commit Raheem Falkins and younger brother Niguel Falkins (Ole Miss offer) at receiver, QB Joey Louis and Ole Miss commit Eugene Brazley at RB.
Carver racked up 500 yards of total offense in a 62-35 second-round win over seventh-seeded Catholic-New Iberia. Don't forget about the Carver defense, which picked off Catholic standout Joe Lissard six times.
Evangel, as always, has plenty of size along the interior. The big man on campus is 6-foot-7, 325-pound offensive lineman Josh Thomas (Houston commit). QB Dakota Duron decimated most secondaries by playing pitch-and-catch with a receiving corps headed up by Louisiana Tech commit Trent Taylor.
The Eagles have a hard-hitting senior linebacker in X'Zavier Preston (Oregon State commit). Evangel's two losses were to Ouachita Parish and Barbe (both still alive in the 5A bracket).
NO. 3 UNIVERSITY LAB (11-1) AT NO. 6 CALVARY BAPTIST (9-3) -- University travels to Shreveport in another 2A contest. U-High, buoyed by sophomore running back Nicholas Brossette's five touchdowns, disposed of 14th-seeded Loreauville in the second round. Brossette bullied his way past the Loreauville defense behind the blocking of four-star junior OG Garrett Brumfield.
Calvary has a win over defending 5A state champ West Monroe on its resume, but the Cavaliers also lost a shocker to Mansfield during district. The key for the Cavs could be 2013 signal-caller Daniel Fitzwater. The 6-foot-6 Fitzwater has 3,360 yards passing with 38 TDs and seven picks. Calvary is without 2015 RB/DB Orlando Bradford (injury).
