USAAAB: West Defense Preview

A'Shawn Robinson

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Scout.com previews the West defense at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which boasts a number of the most highly recruited players in the country at each and every position.

Defensive Line

The rotation at defensive tackle is going to be completely insane. The top two players in the country at the position Eddie Vanderdoes and A'Shawn Robinson expect to be playing side-by-side, but will be pushed by elite talents like Isaiah Golden, Justin Manning and Scott Pagano. Golden and Manning will be playing together in college after this game at Texas A&M.

The defensive ends will not be as deep as a unit, but the trio of players should be able to put some pressure on the East offense. USC commit Torrodney Prevot is pass rush specialist, lightning quick coming off the edge. On the strong side you the No. 10 end in the country Kylie Fitts, who has the size to stand up offensive linemen. Joe Mathis is another big, strong kid who could play anywhere along the line.

Linebacker

Looking at the roster a 3-4 defense may seem like a good idea. The thought of getting Jaylon Smith and Mike Mitchell, the No. 1 and No. 2 rated MLBs, on the same field at the same time in the middle of a defense should sound appealing to anybody. Both are big, physical pounders with the ability to run. Tim Kimbrough, the No. 6 MLB, is also on the squad and should not be discounted.

Josh Banderas, Myles Jack and Deoundrei Davis will likely be the outside linebackers. This is a good mix of talents. All-around grittiness, size and speed. Chans Cox is a big-bodied linebacker, who is a great all-around athlete. He could contribute at a number of positions. In a pinch he could fill in for some reps at defensive end.

Defensive Back

The West team will boast the top two safeties on the West Coast Su'a Cravens and Tahaan Goodman. Cravens, a USC commit, is No. 1 rated safety in the country. Goodman, the No. 5 rated safety in the country, is considering offers from schools across the country. Kameron Miles is the top-rated safety in the Midlands and gives the unit a a true thumper who can cover deep over the middle and come up and support the run tenaciously.

At corner it is the well-season Chris Hawkins who will come in as the top-rated recruit, No. 8 at the position nationally. He is starred and proven himself against top level competition in camps and games. When thinking West Coast you don't naturally think of Michigan, but Michigan verbal Jourdan Lewis, from the powerhouse program Cass Tech in Detroit will be repping the 'Wolverine State' on a team. Texas speedster commit Antwuan Davis rounds out the talent at corner.
