USC athletic director announced the firing of baseball head coach Frank Cruz on Thursday after a USC investigation found the coach to be in violation of NCAA rules which limit the amount of activity players can participate in when supervised by the coaching staff.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — USC athletic director Pat Haden announced Wednesday the dismissal of baseball head coach Frank Cruz.

Cruz violated NCAA CARA [Countable Athletically-Related Activities] rules, which are in place to restrict the number of hours student-athletes are allowed to practice with or be supervised by the coaching staff.

USC self-reported the NCAA infraction and will self-impose restrictions on the baseball program for the remainder of this season and next year, which include a reduced number of practice hours.

"Adhering to all NCAA rules is paramount for each one of our coaches, student-athletes and staff members," Haden said in a statement released by the school. "Those who knowingly break NCAA rules are subject to termination."

In the wake of the Cruz's termination, Haden promoted associate head coach Dan Hubbs to head coach. "Dan is a good coach, he is highly-regarded in the baseball community and he has strong Trojan roots," Haden said.

Hubbs pitched for the Trojans from 1991-93.

This is his second season on the coaching staff. He spent the previous twelve years years as a pitching coach at California.

Cruz spent two seasons at USC, leading the Trojans to a 48-63 record.

USC was picked to finish 8th this year in the Pac-12 baseball preseason coaches' poll.

They start their season on Friday at Cal State Fullerton.
