FOX Sports NEXT was on Cromwell Field for USC's voluntary throwing session Friday morning.
Sticking to his normal routine, freshman receiver Steven Mitchell stayed after the conclusion of the 11on11 scrimmage to get in extra one-on-one work.
Mitchell was running a deep route, guarded by freshman defensive back Leon McQuay, when he planted his right leg in the turf to turn for the catch. His knee buckled, twisting awkwardly. Mitchell spun and went down on his back - immediately grabbing his knee. No contact was made with McQuay.
No training staff is allowed on the field during throwing sessions, per NCAA rules prohibiting staff from voluntary workouts. Quarterback Max Browne ran off the field to get help.
Mitchell was screaming in pain.
The training staff arrived and carted Mitchell off minutes after getting to the field.
No official word on the injury, though it's hard to imagine this would be anything less than a significant injury that could possibly sideline Mitchell for an extended period of time.
