Who will lead USC's program into the future? Athletic director Pat Haden is on the move...

Monday, 8 am PT
A source has confirmed that Chris Petersen has withdrawn his name from the USC opening.

Speculation, unconfirmed, had pinned athletic director Pat Haden in Boise on Sunday to talk with Petersen about the position.

A source tells me Vanderbilt's James Franklin is now the top candidate for the job.

Franklin's name was one that was mentioned before fall camp even started at USC as one who the Trojans were interested in to take this program into the future.

950 KJR Radio in Seattle interviewed Washington coach and former USC assistant Steve Sarkisian this morning. Sarkisian told KJR that USC has 'reached out' to him, but that he did not interview for the position.

Here's the audio:

According to a source, Sarkisian is now second on USC's list behind Franklin.

Haden interviewed Jack Del Rio, as first reported by FOX Sports Jay Glazer weeks ago, but at this time, Del Rio is not a top candidate.

Saturday
First reported by CBS Sports Bruce Feldman, Kevin Sumlin 'recommitted' to Texas A&M as its head coach. Sumlin and A&M came to agreement on a new six-year contract.

Sumlin was the top candidate for the USC coaching vacancy.
