Granite Bay (Calif.) linebacker Cameron Smith (6-2, 230), has made several visits to the Southland from his Sacramento area home this spring.

Smith has been working out with BBT, his 7v7 squad, who is participating in the Passing Down Best in the West this coming weekend.

It's all a part of Smith's plan to drop weight and show more versatility as a linebacker.

The top middle linebacker nationally, Smith has always flourished against the run, but admitted he needed to work on his pass coverage, so his time with former Wisconsin defensive lineman Trashaun Lewis, who runs BBT, has helped him immensely.

"I'm about 230 right now, comfortably, and I'd like to get down to about 227," said Smith. "Working with Tra has helped me so much. The 7v7 isn't really my game, but it will eventually have to be, so it's been nice working on my hips and my eyes."

Smith will be back down in Southern California next weekend for the Best In the West Finals and will likely hit up the UCLA Spring Showcase the night before.

This past weekend, though, his trip down South had little to do with 7v7 and everything to do with him checking out USC's Spring Game and UCLA's last regular weekend practice.

"We went to the UCLA practice earlier on Saturday and then went over to USC for their Spring Game," said Smith. "I had visited UCLA and USC's campuses multiple times before, so that really wasn't the focus for me. It was mainly to see the practices and the spring game."

While in Westwood, Smith was out on Spaulding Field talking with the Bruin coaches while watching them at work.

"I talked to everybody there and it went really well so that was good," said Smith. "I've been talking a lot of late to Coach (Jim) Mora, he's been talking to me the most. And then next has been Coach (Angus) McClure and then Coach (Jeff) Ulbrich too every now and then."

Smith finished up the day at USC with the Trojans' Spring Game at the Coliseum.

"I had camped at USC last summer so we got to play a little game in the Coliseum, but it was really cool being in there. Coach (Peter) Sirmon was just pointing things out to me, where I'd play and all that."

Sirmon has been recruiting Smith to USC and plans to be in Granite Bay this week.

"Coach Sirmon is supposed to be coming by on Tuesday," said Smith. "I talk with Coach (Clay) Helton and Coach Sark (Steve Sarkisian), but Coach Sirmon is the one who's been really recruiting me."

Smith has been leaning towards USC for a while, and while the Trojans are in a good spot for him, he said he's not officially holding a number one school.

"I don't really have a number one," said Smith. "I probably won't announce a number one school until I commit. Right now, I'm looking at every school and will come out with a top five in the summer."

But Smith said that USC is certain to make his top five then. The rest will be determined in the coming months.

"USC definitely will be on there and Alabama has been showing more interest with Tosh Lupoi and I'm supposed to get on the phone with Nick Saban," said Smith. "Tennessee, Wisconsin and UCLA, I'm all talking a lot with them and Oregon too. I'll work on narrowing it down."

Smith plans to camp at the Oakland NFTC next month, where he's hoping to earn an invitation to The Opening, but said he doesn't have any plans to do any college camps this summer.
