Vaughns going national
Wednesday, he was back home, but still participating in another national camp.
"I went to the USC Rising Stars Camp, but only in the afternoon," said Vaughns. "I got there kind of late because I was coming from school, but it was great because the coaches always show me so much love when I'm there.
"They really teach you and show you how to get better. It gives you confidence to go out there on these other high school kids and just kill ‘em. I went there to basically prove that I'm not just an average athlete.
"Overall the camp was good and the caches were fair with me.
Average is something Vaughns is not. In addition to his appearance at USC, Vaughns performances during the seven-on-seven circuit are building his resume as one of the best players in the 2016 class.
"From the beginning, I jumped into things with Body by Tra because I was trying to play college ball like my older brother," said Vaughns. "He played on the team before, so I decided to do the same thing and just learn what I could to keep getting better.
"I feel like over the past couple months, I've learned how to step up. I've learned to make big plays when it counts."
And his weekend in Florida was full of big plays.
"I just approached it like it was another tournament," said Vaughns. "The only change was getting on a plane and flying there and back.
"I did play more aggressive because there were more athletes out there trying to make plays. I just had to step up and show them that they weren't the only ones that can make plays.
"Out there (in Florida), they just want to talk. California kids are calm. We talk when we want to, but we're more about letting our play speak for itself. As a team, we must have had 100 touchdowns. We won one game 35-0."
Team BBT ended up finishing fourth overall in the tournament.
As for USC, the 2016 wide out, who sports a Trojans visor almost every event he participates in, is taking recruiting methodically.
"My interest in USC is high," said Vaughns. "They treat me like family. Even if I don't go there, I feel like they want what is best for me. They stay on me about my grades and things like that, so I feel really good when I go down there."
