Commitment breakdown, one-for-two

USC could have picked up two new commitments on Wednesday, but instead -- they'll have to settle for just one of those players, for now.

The thought going into two commitment announcements on Wednesday was that USC was going to sweep the two prospects, both of whom the Trojans have been aggressively recruiting.

But in a surprising twist not even Scout's most seasoned recruiting analysts predicted, the Trojans only landed one of the two players.

Moraga (Calif.) Campolindo tight end Tyler Petite announced early in the day for the Duke Blue Devils.

It came down to USC and Duke for Petite. The three-star recruit was at USC's Rising Stars just a week ago, and it was widely thought the Trojan staff solidified its program in his mind.

Something was solidified on the visit - that Petite wants to play college football at Duke.

The loss of three-star recruit is the first misstep on the recruiting trail for USC coach Steve Sarkisian, who needs to find a tight end in his 2015 recruiting class.

Later in the afternoon, USC bounced back on the commitment front when Anaheim (Calif.) Servite offensive tackle Clayton Johnston pledged to the Trojans.

Johnston picked up an offer from USC following its linemen camp in mid-June. It was the second time in just two weeks the USC coaches saw the tackle workout. He was a standout performer at Prime Time Polynesian's Kumite Linemen Camp when USC coaches were instructing.

Now with nine commits, USC's 2015 recruiting class is ranked No. 12 nationally by Scout.
