Valencia (Calif.) safety JayJay Wilson may be growing out of the defensive back position, but the…
Local schools like Wilson
Now 6-foot-2 and pushing 225-pounds, Wilson is quickly sprouting into a whole new player. Of course, that’s not to say he isn’t still one of the region’s top prospects.
“I went down to the SC camp this summer and won defensive MVP, so that was fun,” said Wilson. “I had a lot of fun there and learned a lot.
“The competition was great. I played against guys from all kinds of states. Florida, Georgia… it was really good to test myself against that competition. It was crazy, but it was fun too.”
Wilson could be classified as a utility player, jumbo athlete or at various other hybrid positions. Wilson had more than 900 all-purpose yards last season playing wide receiver and running back for the Vikings.
Although he has made a name for himself as a receiver, Wilson ran for 140-yards on 25 carries against league power, Hart.
At USC, he played mostly safety, although most schools are recruiting him as an athlete.
“USC’s campus was beautiful,” said Wilson. “The whole school is beautiful and their program is wonderful.
“But going there, I wanted to learn from my position coaches. I wanted to learn from the DB coach, the linebacker coach and even Coach (Steve Sarkisian).
“They’re all at that next level and I want to have a piece of that knowledge. I want to know what to prepare for now so I can be great when I get there.”
While USC had Wilson work out as a defensive back, his camp review did provide further insight to where he may play in college.
“They think I’m really athletic and quick for my size,” said Wilson. “They saw me being better at linebacker or tight end, which doesn’t matter to me. I just want to play wherever I go.”
Later in June, Wilson was at UCLA’s camp. Banged up from passing league, he did not participate in their camp, but did walk the campus and meet with the Bruin coaching staff.
“It was cool, and I’m pretty familiar with their coaches,” said Wilson. “It was fun just hanging out and seeing what they have going.”
Thus far, Wilson has scholarship offers from Oregon State, Utah, Arizona State, Colorado State, Colorado and Fresno State.
“UCLA and USC have been talking to me a lot, so I think they’re very interested,” said Wilson. “I also like Colorado and Arizona State a lot too, but the recruiting thing is crazy.
“You talk to a college, and at that time, you really want to go there. But then you talk to the next college and feel like that’s where you want to go. I haven’t taken any visits yet, so we’ll see.”
However, the Sun Devils and Buffaloes have managed to stand out in the early going of Wilson’s recruitment.
“Arizona State is building right now and they had a great season last season,” said Wilson. “They have a great recruiting class coming in, so I like what they have as a team and their coaches are all coming back.
“They have some dudes I’ve played with committed too. Guys like Brady White, Demario Richard… I’d like to fit into that puzzle for them too, but I'll just have to keep evaluating my options.
“At Colorado, Teddy (Tedric) Thompson plays there and I’ve known him since I was a freshman. It would be cool playing safety next to him again. That coaching staff is great too. I communicate with them great and we just click.
“That’s the best thing. When you go to the next level, you want to have a coaching staff you’re comfortable with.”
