Payton picks USC

First Coast High School wide receiver Tristan Payton commits to the Trojans as expected Friday from the campus of USC

Jacksonville (Fla.) wide receiver Tristan Payton went a long way to commit to USC Friday.

The three-star wide out took his second unofficial visit of the summer, arriving in L.A. Thursday to watch the Trojans practice at the Coliseum. Wearing USC shorts and a hat, it was apparent his feeling about USC had not changed since the Rising Stars camp in late June.

“I'm blessed to say that I am committed to the University of Southern California,” Payton tweeted Friday just before another Trojan practice began.

Payton becomes the fourth wide receiver committed to USC in the 2015 class, and the No. 15 commit overall.

Payton knew USC was him after his first unofficial visits in June.

“I felt really good with the coaches and players out,” said Payton. “Even being away from home, I still feel really good being on the West Coast and at USC.

“I love the Cali lifestyle — it’s just different. I came from nothing, really, so I’ve been pushing to give myself an opportunity like this. Living in California is great, and I want to get to the top and I feel like I can do great things in Cali.”

Payton was committed to Florida earlier in the year, but after visiting USC and going over what he wanted in a college, the 6-foot-, 185-pound wide out de-commit from the Gators.

“I had no reason to commit to Florida so early,” said Payton. “I should have given it more time and thought about my decision more.”

The new coaching staff at USC has worked hard to convince Payton to make the move West, but Lane Kiffin carryover Tee Martin was the coach most involved in recruiting him.

“They have young coaches and they’re kind of chill, but will stay on you at the same time,” said Payton. “All of the coaches made me feel at home at USC.”

Which speaks to what drew Payton to visit USC in the first place.

“I wanted a school that wasn’t all about just football,” said Payton. “USC has great academics and it’s a great school. I’m not just committing to the coaches, but I’m committing to the school.”
