After the Wednesday practice the team will check into a hotel that night and go through their normal game day preparations on Thursday while leading up to the late scrimmage which is set to mirror the time schedule for the opener against Va Tech next week.
Today's practice featured a lot of work for Matt Leinart as the Trojan quarterback looks to get his arm in shape for the start of the season. Matt look good on his deep passes, his arm wasn't overly strong but it was accurate and on target. There was one stretch during a passing drill where he hit Reggie Bush with a nice touch pass on a deep sideline pattern and he then followed that up immediately with a deep connection to Chris McFoy. Leinart later had deep completions to Dale Thompson and Nick Vanderboom as well as a lofted pass to Steve Smith over the head of the defender for a 15 yard gain.
McFoy had a nice day today. He and Will Buchanon were making plays with Chris working the middle of the field and Will coming up with a tough sideline catch off a low throw from John David Booty. McFoy also had a punt block.
Kevin Arbet saw action and he picked off a Mike McDonald pass while going against the service team offense. ....Rocky Hinds and McDonald were taking snaps for the service team.....Fred Matua and Shaun Cody had some intense battles today.....Tom Malone was hitting some long punts from his end zone. The coaches are working with Tom to do less directional kicking than he has in the past. The thought is that he kicks so far that it's better just to let him boom it rather than try to kick to a specific side of the field.....Matt Grootegoed made a play on Desmond Reed when Leinart dumped a pass over the head of Groots who quickly turned around and corralled Reed before he had a chance to head upfield.....Jeff Schweiger and Keith Rivers each had sacks in the team drills.....At this point Collin Ashton is snapping for punts with Will Collins handling placekicks.....There was a lot of good work on kickoff coverage including Rivers doing a lot of wedgebusting....Desmond Reed was in the group of punt returners.....Fred Davis has had added incentive the past couple days as his mother surprised him with a weekend visit and she's staying over to watch some practice....Alex Holmes is expected back on Wednesday and he says his calf is fine.....Mark Sanchez attended yet another practice. It's been a great opportunity for Mark this fall to get a head start on the learning process and he takes advantage of it by coming to meetings and studying the plays in addition to watching practice....Delon Washington watched practice from the sidelines. The former Trojan running back, remembered for his performance to help beat Notre Dame in 1996 to end the streak, is back at USC getting his masters in social work.
