The tight end position is very important to the overall success of the Trojans, and this year’s group is talented. The switch to defensive end for Gerald Washington has left the group a little thin, but they are proven and experienced. Led by former wide out Fred Davis, these pass catching/ run blocking athletes are ready for yet another run at a National Championship.
Fred Davis - Sr. - The former Ohio product has really come on over the last year or so, and it has been a great sight. Davis has come a long way from his off the field distractions early on in his Trojan career to be mentioned amongst some of the best at his position nationwide. Davis is seemingly growing more and more comfortable with his spot as the years go on, and look for him to make a big splash heading into his senior season. With former Oregon State tight end Joe Newton out of the picture, Davis will make a hard push for 1st Team All Pac-10 honors. Davis has really worked on his blocking ability over the spring, only strengthening his skill set. After seeing Davis’ one handed over-the-shoulder grab during last year’s Rose Bowl victory over Michigan, I can’t help but think that his production will increase with the loss of the Trojans’ two top pass catchers.
Dale Thompson - Sr. - Dale Thompson has been one thing since his arrival at SC, consistent. Thompson is known more as a blocking specialist then a receiving threat, but the his current 4.68 forty yard dash has many people wondering why he isn’t involved more in the passing game. The one thing that may see his time shorten is the emergence of future star Anthony McCoy. Thompson had a very productive spring, continuing his solid work in blocking, even hauling in a few big catches for the Trojans.
Anthony McCoy - So. - No ifs, ands, or buts about it, McCoy is going to be special. McCoy is a threat every time he starts his routes, adding a different element to an already productive unit. McCoy spent the entirety of the spring rehabbing his injured ankle that took place during a pick-up basketball game (sounds familiar to former Trojan tight end Dominque Byrd). McCoy will see his time rise dramatically heading into fall. McCoy will need to improve his blocking and overall knowledge of the position, seeing as he is one year away from being the go to guy at tight end.
Jimmy Miller - Jr. - Jimmy Miller, the former Westlake standout, is another very solid option at the tight end spot. Miller, who actually finished ahead of teammate Dale Thompson on the most recent depth chart, is a solid red zone option as made evident with his two touchdown catches on only three career receptions. Miller will continue to provide valuable depth. The tight end position this year is in very good hands, and each of these players has seen valuable game experience and adds something to the table.
Davis is definitely at the top of this group, but by the time the next spring campaign is wrapping up, I expect Anthony McCoy to be ready for a breakout role in the Trojan offense.
