Havili Healthy
After going down yesterday with a neck stinger, fullback Stanley Havili was
back at full speed today. Havili caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from John David Booty on the last play of the day. After practice, Pete Carroll had some high
praise for the fullback, "He is potentially the best fullback we have had
since we have been here and that is a lot to say when he's only played in a few
games. But it's just that clear."
Rowe at Fullback
Another day another defensive player switching to the offensive side of the
ball. Safety Alfred Rowe practiced today at the fullback spot. This move should
add some needed depth to the fullback position who has included Havili and true
freshman Jordan Campbell to this point.
Power Backs
During team drills the offense was focused on running between the tackles.
Broderick Green and Alan Bradford, two of the bigger tailbacks, got the majority
of the carries. Green looked particularly impressive running the ball up the
middle. Green who is listed at 6'1 230 was dishing out plenty of punishment.
Bradford and Green are both viable options in short yardage and goal line
situations.
NFL Scouts at Practice
With all the potential NFL players currently on the Trojans roster, it is no
surprise to see NFL scouts out at Howard Jones Field. Scouts from the Patriots,
Cowboys and Jaguars were all spotted on the sidelines. The scouts commented on
how intimidating the big Trojan receivers must be for college defensive backs.
Green Stays at Wide Receiver
Backup quarterback Garrett Green was practicing with the wide receivers again
today. Green had another impressive day at wide receiver to the delight of his
teammates. Green caught another touchdown over the middle from John David Booty.
Carroll Praises Ronald Johnson
After practice Pete Carroll praised the play of freshman wide receiver Ronald
Johnson. "There's no question he is going to help us this year. I really
like a lot of things about him. He's tough, he's got terrific speed, and his
hands are excellent. He's a good all-around athlete."
Various Carroll Quotes
On Marc Tyler: "He is still waiting for the space where they took the
screws out to heal. I'm not hearing any time lines, but I would think it's a few
weeks."
On Chauncey Washington: "He's having a really solid camp, he's doing a
really nice job in pass protection. His recognition of defenses and that stuff
takes a long time to get really good at, and he has acquired that."
