Mark Sanchez: The Mexican Mouthpiece

¡Viva El Quarterback! Mark Sanchez celebrates his Mexican heritage while living the American Dream. The USC campus is abuzz with media, which has been steadily growing as quarterback Mark Sanchez completed two starts for the Trojans in as many weeks.

Mark Sanchez, is a delightful young quarterback challenging incumbent John David Booty for the starting role for the last half of the football season. He has energized the Trojans, on and off the field. Sanchez is polite, greeting members of the press with handshakes and smiles, not exactly the norm for football players.

Wednesday’s practice attendance doubled in size as representatives from the Latino media have begun to pay attention to the swirl around Mark Sanchez’ role for the Trojans.

Among press members who made their appearance today was “Telemundo,” (TV) “La Opinion,” (Newsprint) and “Latino 96” (Radio). Attention by the press and general population has been growing steadily since Sanchez relieved Booty at the quarterback position. Booty has been nursing a broken finger in his throwing hand.

Watching the buzz, attention and growing frenzy around the football team brings back memories of Fernandomania of the 1980’s. Within the last two weeks, websites, newsprint and radio stations have taken notice of Sanchez’ plight as the starting quarterback.

Some talked about his “Mexican Mouthpiece,” fashioned by the team dentist using the Mexican Flag colors (red, green and white) and symbols (eagle and snake). His explanation for doing it was, “my last name is Sanchez.” He is proud of his heritage and the mouthpiece is a “portrayal of his love for his heritage.” Sanchez takes his position on the team as a place to showcase his heritage and to share it with youth who may look up to him.

Others have dug up an old off-the-field problem, which occurred a few years ago. This just goes to show the extent of the growing fascination with Sanchez. Regardless of what happened in the past, (which he was exonerated from), the press and the populace are jumping on the Sanchez Bandwagon.

These days, the questions surrounding Trojan practices include ‘who gets the start’ against Oregon this weekend. Booty has been recovering well but Sanchez continues to get the first team reps.
