In Pete Carroll lingo, today might be named Tuesday Thursday. Coach Carroll is precise about how the team practices each week for upcoming ball games. Because of the bye week and the fact that this week's game is on a Thursday, the practice routine has been moved to appropriate days. On this Tuesday, the team practiced with the normal Thursday routine – preparing the upcoming gameplan.
Upbeat and Wired
The first thing noticeable on Howard Jones–Brian Kennedy Field today, was that the Trojans entered the practice field with a new attitude. Something happened, and there was a renewed energy that had been absent of late. Nothing phony here – the players came out excited and pumped up, it will be interesting to see how this translates to the field on Thursday.
On the Sidelines
USC commit, Kevin Graf attended practice today. The high school junior offensive tackle (6'5.5"- 297 lbs) from Agoura, CA, committed to the Trojans this fall. Graf's father, Allan played for the 1972 National Championship Trojan football team. His brother, Derek played for the 2002 Orange Bowl team with Heisman Trophy winner, Carson Palmer.
Ricky Don't Lose that Number
Two weeks ago, we profiled USC Gatorade Bartender/volunteer, Ricky Rosas. Rosas has received notoriety this season, being featured on websites and even a sports talk program. Today, a Los Angeles Times photographer was on hand to attain photos of Rosas in action for a profile piece to be featured on Thanksgiving Day in the Times.
Pete Carroll announced that Kaluka Maiava would get the start on Thursday, replacing injured linebacker Keith Rivers. Rivers will play if he is available. Previously Carroll has said Malcolm Smith is ready to play the position as well.
Everson Griffen will also get a start at defensive end, as Kyle Moore is also battling to come back from injury. Moore will also get into the game.
Against the scout team, Kevin Ellison got an interception. Kyle Moore batted down a Mitch Mustain pass. Vincent Joseph played tailback and did a fine job, scampering through the first team offense. Brandon Carswell grabbed a tough pass from Mustain in the middle of traffic. Rey Maualuga got a big hit in the middle of the field.
On offense Stafon Johnson and Chauncey Washington ran well in back of John David Booty. Stanley Havili caught a nice pass on the sideline for a touchdown. Vidal Hazelton and Ronald Johnson both caught passes for long gains.
