The intensity was high at Howard Jones Field as the Trojans came out in shoulder pads for the first time this spring. SCPlaybook was there and caught up with Pete Carroll to get the coaches thoughts on practice, the play of the offensive line and much more.

Pete Carroll on Friday’s practice:

“A lot of goods things happened, a lot of speed it feels like. Guys are playing real aggressive. I know we look like we are somewhat of a young team but we have a lot of football in us. Guys seem to have a good sense for what we are trying to do on both sides of the ball at an early date and we are executing a lot of stuff. We are going to just keep on marching and see what happens…. I thought the whole thing was really fast and sharp and all of that.”

Pete Carroll on the play of the quarterbacks:

“I thought we were a little inaccurate throwing the ball. We were behind guys a lot with the football and I think it was a number of guys. All three of the guys threw some balls that weren’t as sharp and it was the first day in pads so they can feel the rush a little bit more, which it takes a little bit to get used to.”

Pete Carroll on the play of Nick Howell at offensive tackle:

“He’s really handling himself, he never did really do well at center and it wasn’t a good spot for him. He’s a real physical kid, a tough kid at the line of scrimmage, tough at the point of attack. He’s just grown up in the system and he’s really performed at a rate that gives him a chance to compete for the playing time. Nobody is starting right now. Guys are just rolling through here but he has given himself a chance to.”

Pete Carroll on the offensive line:

“This is an athletic group. It’s more of an athletic group than probably we have had. (Kristofer) O’Dowd feels really comfortable with what is going on and Mike Reardon is a really sharp kid. They are making their calls and not always are they right but they are communicating well. This is a group that has to come together and we will figure that in time but being verbal and communicating like they are will really help us come together and grow fast.”
