Jeremy Bethell: Making a Mark

Jeremy Bethell is becoming a familiar face at USC camps. He has attended a few camps held at USC the last two years. Bethell will be a senior this year at West High School in Bakersfield. At 6’6” 316 lbs., Bethell has the physical size to be a force on the offensive line. Clay de Leon caught up with Bethell to discuss his experience at USC’s Lineman Camp.

So how did the Lineman Camp go for you?

“I think it went well, I’m just trying to learn a little bit about offense and trying to learn a little more there.”

Did you do a position change, with the offensive line?

“Yes. I’ve been playing football since I was eight years old and I’ve always done Nose Guard on the defense. One of my coaches at school asked me to start playing offensive line this year. Pat Ruel also asked me to play offensive line. I decided I could switch over to that. I want to go to USC, and if that is a way I can get there, that’s a way I can get there.”

“(Coach Pat Ruel) was really helpful, and critiqued my form a little bit and tried to help me out with my footwork a little more. I personally had a very good experience with the coaches, I enjoyed them very much. ”

Talk a little about your favorite schools.

“I would like to go to USC, my first choice, then Fresno State, my second and Alabama, my third choice.”

“My mom has had some communication with coach Ruel, Pat Hill was interested in me at Fresno State, and with Alabama, I’ve gotten a few letters.”

“I’ve gotten letters from Holy Cross, Harvard, Redlands and Hamilton. I don’t really know all the schools I’ve gotten letters from, just the ones I am interested in.”

Was this your first time you’ve attended camp at USC?

“No, this is actually my third time I’ve attended a camp there. I went to the Lineman’s camp last year and this year, and I attended the Nike Camp. I’ll be attending the overnight camp as well (Rising Stars Camp, June 25-26).

Who is recruiting you at USC?

“Coach Ruel.”

Bethell reports a 2.82 GPA last quarter, but averages 3.0. He will be retaking the SAT in the fall. He will also likely take the ACT.
