Quoting Carroll: San Jose State Edition

Pete Carroll

Joe McKnight, Matt Barkley and a smothering defense led the Trojans to a convincing 56-3 win over the San Jose State Spartans in front of 84, 325 fans at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. SCPlaybook's Kevin Carden caught up with Pete Carroll afterwards to get the coaches thoughts on the big win.

Carroll on the 56-3 victory:

"This turned out just right for us. After putting in so much work for the past few months it was nice to get out here at home, in front of a crowd and show what we could do. We had a slow start, which was imaginable, but once we settled down, we played good football."

Carroll on the play of freshman quarterback Matt Barkley:

"We have had great kids play quarterback here. No one has shown such poise at such a young age as Barkley has and we are absolutely thrilled to have him. He had a good solid game and when it comes down to it he continues to do what we expect him to do. Barkley knows who he is and has great belief in his ability."

Carroll on Barkley's ability to handle the spotlight:

"Matt Barkley absolutely handled the situation. He loved every minute of it and he has showed us nothing but this same demeanor since he has been here. He is a remarkable young man and he was a blast to coach today. What Jeremy (Bates) and Matt put together today was great. We are thrilled about that. The team never had any worry about our quarterback. He has never given anything but an indication that he is always cool and calm. The offense was kind of stammering around a bit at the beginning, but he had no problem getting them on track. It's not how you start, it is how you finish, and we have always believed that."

Carroll on the play of the defensive line:

"They really owned the line of scrimmage like they should and pressured the quarterback. A ton of guys played throughout the game. I think what was great was the experience that they gained by getting out on the field and playing a lot."

Carroll on USC's running backs:

"Coming out of camp we thought we would really work Joe (McKnight). Bradford has always done a great job for us, too. He will get his carries for us too. Stafon (Johnson) is great in traffic and is an excellent scorer. Hopefully if we score a lot of touchdowns this season he will get a lot, too."

Carroll on the play of the linebackers: "I thought the linebacker crew is off to a great start. They had 16 tackles for losses. Jarvis Jones showed up and was great for us today. Nick Perry also had two sacks. It was not just the linebacking crew but all of the front seven that looked great today."
