The USC Trojans received a very big Christmas present in the form of 6-4, 297-pound defensive tackle George Uko, who made his verbal commitment to the Trojans public today.
“I was planning on doing it at the Under Armour game but I would rather just worry about the game instead of doing all that,” Uko said. “I just felt like pulling it and letting the public know.”
The five-star recruit from Don Lugo High School said he has actually been a silent commit to USC since back in August but decided to let his intentions known on Christmas Day.
“They have known because I have been a silent commit,” Uko said of the USC coaching staff. “They were real happy because they were looking for a defensive tackle.”
Uko is just the player that the coaches were looking for. The massive defensive lineman displayed good quickness and footwork at USC’s Rising Stars Camp, where he became a high priority for the 2010 recruiting class after a dominant performance.
Rated as Scout.com’s No.3 defensive tackle in the class, Uko has spent some time at Howard Jones Field watching practices, and was impressed with the intensity and tempo of USC’s coaches and players.
“It was totally different,” Uko said. “At USC, it’s a different tempo and is always upbeat and fiery at practice. It’s never dull.”
One of the main factors in Uko’s decision was the chance to play for USC defensive line coach Jethro Franklin.
“I like his attitude and the way he goes about things,” Uko said. “He seems really cool and is going to push me the way that I need to be pushed. I feel like he can make me into the best player that I can be.”
With the commitment, USC now has 5 five-star recruits in the 2010 recruiting class.
Scouting Report on George Uko:
A prototype interior line prospect, Uko is quick off the ball and powerful at the point of attack. He's physically dominant in nearly every aspect of the game as he plays with great strength and leverage. He needs to play every down, but when he's motivated, he can do it all. – Scott Kennedy
Big George Uko gives USC one of the best DL in the 2010 recruiting class.
