Biography:
Considered by many to be the heart and soul of the vaunted Trojan defense, Matt Grootegoed started the 2003 season in strong fashion until an ankle injury in the season’s sixth game forced him to miss part or all of every remaining game on the schedule. Five tackles and a forced fumble at Auburn don’t tell half the story of the job he did in helping to limit the skilled and proven Tiger running attack. The numbers kept piling up through the next four games with nine tackles and a fumble recovery against BYU, four tackles and a forced fumble against Hawaii, eight stops in the loss to Cal and nine more at Arizona State. When “Groots” went down in the Stanford game, the linebacking corps was patched together and finished the season strongly without him. However, no group and certainly no individual player could match the intensity and instinct that Matt Grootegoed brings with him to every play. He looks to start the 2004 season completely healthy and will find himself at a new position. He will move to the weak side after three years on the strong side (a move he is undoubtedly fully capable of making). A healthy and motivated Matt Grootegoed is just another advantage for Pete Carroll and his defense.
