| Biography: |
| You don’t often see teams bringing numbers out of retirement. Even less often do you see prominent universities bestow Heisman winning numbers on freshmen. But that’s exactly what USC did with Darnell Bing. As odd as it was to see number 20 flying around on the defensive side of the ball for the Trojans, it was even odder that this freshman could actually live up to the hype surrounding him. On top of the pressure coming with the number, Bing had the responsibility of replacing an All-American safety in Troy Polamalu. But leave it to this heralded freshman to not only step in, but step in with authority and set the tone for the entire year on the season’s opening defensive stand. Against Auburn, a team willing to play on the ground and pound it out with its running backs, Bing intercepted a pass on the third play of the game, and Auburn was never able to get into a rhythm offensively. Bing continued to contribute all year, finishing the year fourth on the team in tackles, with 69, recovering a fumble and intercepting two passes. Entering his sophomore year in 2004, comparisons to great Trojan safeties Troy Polomalu and Ronnie Lott will assuredly be made, and each one will more than likely be validated with a vicious hit by Darnell Bing. |
