| Biography: |
| Another true freshman who exploded on the college football scene in 2003 was running back LenDale White. Running back was a position lacking any returning depth behind starter Hershel Dennis in 2003. However, LenDale White proved to be all the backup the Trojans needed. White teamed with Dennis and fellow freshman Reggie Bush to form one of the most potent backfields in the nation. The fact that White never started a game and yet led the team in rushing yards and touchdowns proves how dominant he could be as the main running back on a roster. However, the three running back approach seemed to benefit everyone involved. White was able to spell both Bush and Dennis during the year and all three were still fresh at the end of the season. To set a record as a freshman tailback at a university dubbed “Tailback U” is quite an achievement. To set three records in a single season is downright ridiculous. During the 2003 season, White ran for the most single-game yards by a freshman in USC history, with 149 against Washington State (breaking his own record he set earlier in the year against Arizona State, 140). He is the first Trojan freshman to rip off back-to-back 100 yard games (Arizona State and Stanford) and he set the all-time single season mark for rushing touchdowns by a USC freshman. White’s “team first” attitude helped him succeed almost as much as his ability. Most running backs find it difficult to share a backfield with one other, let alone two other guys, but White knows that they are all responsible for each other’s success. Seven hundred and fifty-four yards, 13 touchdowns and a 5.3 rushing average are proof that White will make the best of any playing time he gets and evidence that he is in line for a lot more of it. |
